Watermelon Peperomia Variegated – Peperomia argyreia ‘Variegata’

The variegated form of Peperomia argyreia takes one of the houseplant world’s most beloved patterns and elevates it further. The signature watermelon striping — silver arcs over a deep green ground — is interrupted by irregular cream and pale yellow variegation that makes each leaf a one-of-a-kind composition. Thick, succulent-like leaves sit atop burgundy-red petioles, compact and architectural in habit.

A collector’s upgrade on a classic. Slower-growing than the standard form, which only concentrates the appeal — each new leaf is an event. Well-suited to desks, shelves, and terrariums where the detail of the foliage can be appreciated up close.

Care Guide

• Light: Bright indirect light. The variegation is best maintained and most vivid in strong indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which scorches the leaves, and low light, which causes the variegation to revert or fade and slows growth significantly.
• Water: Allow the top half of the soil to dry out between waterings. The thick leaves store water — overwatering is the most common cause of decline. Water less in winter. Bottom watering is recommended to avoid rot at the crown.
• Soil: Well-draining mix is essential. A standard potting mix cut with perlite (50/50) or a dedicated succulent mix works well. Avoid dense, moisture-retentive soils.
• Humidity: Adaptable to average household humidity (40–60%). More tolerant of dry air than many tropical houseplants. No misting required.
• Temperature: 65–80°F (18–27°C). Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F (13°C). Not frost-tolerant.
• Fertilizer: Light feeding with a balanced liquid fertilizer at quarter to half strength once monthly during the growing season (spring–summer). Over-fertilizing can cause leggy growth and diminish variegation contrast. Withhold in winter.
• Repotting: Slow-growing and prefers to be slightly root-bound. Repot only when roots are escaping the drainage holes, moving up just one pot size. Spring is the ideal time.
• Toxicity: Non-toxic to cats, dogs, and humans. Pet-safe.
