Few trailing succulents are as quietly striking as Senecio herreianus. The String of Tears cascades in long, arching strands of teardrop-shaped beads — each one a modified leaf with a translucent "window" that channels light for photosynthesis. Native to the dry slopes of Namibia and South Africa, this plant is engineered for drought and rewards minimal intervention with effortless, sculptural growth.

Best displayed in a hanging planter or elevated shelf where its strands can spill freely. Distinct from its cousin the String of Pearls by its elongated, oval bead shape and slightly more forgiving nature in lower humidity.

Care Guide

  • Light: Bright indirect light; a few hours of gentle morning sun is ideal. Avoid harsh afternoon direct sun, which can scorch the delicate beads.
  • Water: Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water deeply, then wait — overwatering is the primary cause of decline. Reduce further in winter.
  • Soil: Fast-draining cactus or succulent mix. Amend with perlite for added drainage.
  • Humidity: Tolerates low humidity well; no misting required.
  • Temperature: 65–80°F (18–27°C). Protect from frost and cold drafts.
  • Fertilizer: Light feeding with a balanced liquid fertilizer once monthly during the growing season (spring–summer). Skip in fall and winter.
  • Toxicity: Toxic to cats, dogs, and humans if ingested. Display out of reach of pets and children.
