String of Bananas – Senecio radicans

Senecio radicans is the String of Pearls’ faster-growing, more forgiving cousin — and every bit as captivating. Its trailing strands are lined with curved, banana-shaped leaves in a rich blue-green, each tipped with a translucent “window” that channels light into the leaf’s interior. Native to South Africa, it thrives on neglect and rewards patience with vigorous cascading growth.

An ideal choice for hanging planters, high shelves, or anywhere a dramatic trailing silhouette is called for. Faster to establish and more drought-resilient than many trailing succulents.

Care Guide

• Light: Bright indirect light with some direct morning sun. More light-tolerant than String of Pearls — a sunny windowsill suits it well.
• Water: Allow soil to dry completely between waterings. Deeply drought-tolerant; err on the side of underwatering. Reduce significantly in winter.
• Soil: Well-draining cactus or succulent mix, amended with perlite for optimal drainage.
• Humidity: Prefers low to moderate humidity. No misting needed.
• Temperature: 60–80°F (15–27°C). Not frost-hardy; bring indoors if temperatures drop.
• Fertilizer: Light application of balanced liquid fertilizer once monthly in spring and summer. Withhold in fall and winter.
• Toxicity: Toxic to cats, dogs, and humans if ingested. Keep out of reach of pets and children.
