Alocasia Polly Ghost Mint 3”
Hauntingly beautiful and exceptionally rare, the Alocasia Polly Ghost Mint is a collector’s cultivar that redefines what variegation can look like. Where most variegated Alocasias offer splashes or streaks, the Ghost Mint presents something far more ethereal — leaves washed in soft, silvery mint and near-white tones that give the plant an almost translucent, ghostly quality. Set against the bold venation and sculpted silhouette of the Polly form, the effect is unlike anything else in cultivation.
At 3”, this specimen is compact but already expressing its distinctive coloration. Each new leaf is an unveiling — the Ghost Mint’s expression can shift and intensify with optimal light and care, making this one of the most dynamic variegated aroids to collect. Rare, striking, and deeply coveted.
Care Guide
- Light: Bright, indirect light is critical — it is the single most important factor in maintaining and developing the ghost mint variegation. Insufficient light causes new leaves to emerge greener and less expressive. A dedicated grow light is highly recommended. Avoid direct sun, which burns the pale, low-chlorophyll tissue.
- Water: Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry. Highly variegated tissue is more susceptible to stress — keep moisture consistent without overwatering. Ensure full drainage every time and never allow the pot to sit in standing water.
- Humidity: Thrives at 65–80% humidity. The Ghost Mint is particularly sensitive to low humidity, which causes rapid browning on pale leaf margins. A humidifier running nearby is the most reliable approach.
- Temperature: Keep between 65–85°F (18–29°C). Avoid all cold drafts, vents, and temperatures below 60°F. Stability is key — temperature fluctuations can trigger leaf drop or dormancy.
- Soil: A very well-draining, airy aroid mix is essential — combine potting soil with generous perlite and orchid bark. The Ghost Mint’s roots need excellent aeration to stay healthy and support its energy-intensive variegation.
- Fertilizer: Feed every 2–4 weeks with a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season (spring–summer). Consistent, moderate feeding supports new leaf production without burning sensitive roots. Reduce or pause in fall and winter.
- Repotting: At 3”, expect to repot within 6–12 months. Handle with care — the pale, low-chlorophyll tissue means the plant has less energy reserves than a fully green Alocasia. A smooth repot with minimal root disturbance is best.
- Pests: Vigilant pest monitoring is essential. Spider mites and thrips can devastate pale variegated tissue quickly. Inspect weekly, check undersides of all leaves, and treat at first sign with neem oil or insecticidal soap.
- Toxicity: Toxic to pets and humans if ingested. Keep out of reach of children and animals.
