Labisia sp. 'Turtleback' is a prized Malaysian forest floor gem, coveted for its deeply bullate, dark green leaves that catch and hold light like hammered jade. Each leaf surface displays a striking turtleback texture — a dense mosaic of raised cells that gives the plant its evocative name. A slow-growing understory species, it rewards patient collectors with a compact, jewel-like rosette that commands attention in any vivarium, terrarium, or shaded indoor display.

Care Guide

  • Light: Low to medium indirect light. Thrives under 50–100 fc (similar to a bright terrarium or a few feet from a filtered window). Avoid direct sun — leaf surfaces scorch easily.
  • Water: Keep substrate consistently moist but never waterlogged. Allow the top 0.5–1 cm to approach dryness before watering. High humidity (70–90%) is essential; this plant suffers in dry air.
  • Humidity: 70–90% RH. Best kept in a closed or semi-closed terrarium, vivarium, or humidity tent. Will decline quickly in standard household conditions below 50% RH.
  • Temperature: 65–82°F (18–28°C). No cold drafts or temperatures below 60°F.
  • Soil / Substrate: Airy, moisture-retentive mix — coconut coir, orchid bark, perlite, and sphagnum moss (e.g., 40/20/20/20). Excellent drainage is critical to prevent crown rot.
  • Fertilizer: Light feeder. Apply a dilute balanced liquid fertilizer (¼ strength) monthly during active growth. Excess fertilizer causes rapid, less-textured growth.
  • Repotting: Rarely needed due to slow growth. Repot only when rootbound, using a shallow, wide container.
  • Toxicity: Not widely documented; treat as potentially irritating and keep away from pets and children.
