Hoya Royal Hawaiian Purple

Hoya 'Royal Hawaiian Purple' is a striking cultivar prized for its deep, jewel-toned foliage and the characteristic waxy texture shared across the genus. Thick, succulent leaves emerge with rich purple-green undertones that intensify under bright indirect light, making each plant a living study in colour and form. A vigorous yet manageable grower, it trails or climbs gracefully — equally at home cascading from a hanging planter or trained along a trellis.

Like all hoyas, this cultivar rewards patience: established plants produce clusters of star-shaped, sweetly fragrant flowers that emerge from persistent spurs. Never remove spent spurs — new blooms arise from the same points season after season.

Care Guide

Light

Bright indirect light is ideal. An east- or west-facing window is perfect; a few hours of gentle morning sun will deepen the purple pigmentation in the leaves. Avoid harsh midday sun, which can bleach or scorch the foliage.

Water

Allow the potting mix to dry out almost completely between waterings. Hoyas are semi-succulent and highly susceptible to root rot if kept consistently moist. Water thoroughly, then allow excess to drain freely. Reduce frequency in winter when growth slows.

Humidity & Temperature

Comfortable in typical household humidity (40–60%), though it appreciates a slightly more humid environment. Keep temperatures between 60–85°F (15–29°C). Protect from cold draughts and temperatures below 50°F (10°C).

Soil & Potting

Use a well-draining, airy mix — a blend of perlite, orchid bark, and a small amount of quality potting soil works well. Choose a pot with drainage holes and avoid oversizing; hoyas tend to bloom more readily when slightly root-bound.

Fertilising

Feed monthly during the growing season (spring through summer) with a balanced liquid fertiliser diluted to half strength. Reduce or cease feeding in autumn and winter.

Propagation

Easily propagated from stem cuttings with at least one node. Allow the cut end to callous briefly before placing in water, sphagnum moss, or a well-draining mix. Roots typically develop within 3–6 weeks under warm, bright conditions.

Toxicity

Generally considered non-toxic to humans and pets, though ingestion may cause mild digestive discomfort. As always, keep plants out of reach of young children and animals as a precaution.
