Hoya Quinquenervia
Hoya quinquenervia is a vigorous, large-leafed hoya grown for its bold, elongated foliage with a distinctive quilted texture and prominent veining (the species name nods to its multiple parallel leaf veins). Like other hoyas, it's a semi-succulent vine that stores water in its leaves, making it fairly forgiving and well suited to hanging baskets or a trellis where its trailing growth can be shown off. Mature, well-established plants can produce clusters of star-shaped flowers, though bloom timing varies.
- Pot size: 4" nursery pot
Care Guide
- Light: Bright, indirect light; a few hours of gentle morning sun encourages better growth and potential blooming. Avoid intense direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.
- Water: Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry out between waterings. Hoyas store water in their leaves and are more sensitive to overwatering than underwatering.
- Humidity: Average to above-average humidity (40–60%) is fine; higher humidity supports lusher growth.
- Temperature: 65–85°F (18–29°C); avoid cold drafts and sudden temperature swings.
- Soil: Chunky, fast-draining mix — a blend of orchid bark, perlite, and standard potting soil works well to avoid soggy roots.
- Fertilizer: Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength; reduce or stop in fall/winter.
- Blooming: If you see flower buds (peduncles) form, don't trim them off — hoyas often rebloom from the same spurs year after year.
- Common issues: Leaf drop (overwatering or cold shock), wrinkled leaves (underwatering), lack of blooms (insufficient light).
