Hoya Chicken Farm 4”
$25.00
A cult favorite with a name as memorable as its foliage. Hoya 'Chicken Farm' is a hybrid Hoya celebrated for its unusually large, heavily textured leaves — deeply ridged and almost corrugated in appearance, with a rich, dark green surface that catches light beautifully. The bold, tactile quality of its foliage makes it one of the most visually distinctive Hoyas in cultivation, a true statement plant that holds its own without ever needing to bloom.
Named after the Thai nursery where it was first propagated, this variety has earned a devoted following among collectors worldwide.
Care Guide
- Light: Bright, indirect light produces the most vigorous growth and deepest leaf texture. An east- or west-facing window is ideal. It tolerates lower light but growth will slow and the corrugated texture may be less pronounced.
- Water: Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry between waterings. Despite its robust appearance, Hoya Chicken Farm is susceptible to root rot in overly moist conditions. Water thoroughly, then allow the soil to partially dry before watering again. Reduce frequency in winter.
- Humidity: Prefers humidity of 50–70%. Higher humidity encourages larger, more textured leaves. A humidifier or pebble tray is recommended, especially in drier indoor environments.
- Temperature: Thrives between 65–85°F (18–29°C). Avoid cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and temperatures below 55°F.
- Soil: Use a well-aerated, fast-draining mix — a blend of quality potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark is ideal. Good drainage is essential to prevent root rot.
- Fertilizer: Feed monthly during the growing season (spring–summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can stress the plant without improving growth.
- Repotting: Like most Hoyas, Chicken Farm prefers to be slightly root-bound. Repot only when roots are escaping the drainage holes, moving up just one pot size at a time.
- Blooming: Produces clusters of waxy, star-shaped flowers on persistent peduncles. Never remove the flower spurs — new blooms emerge from the same node each season.
- Support: Provide a trellis or moss pole to encourage upright growth, or allow it to trail from a hanging planter for a more dramatic effect.
Non-toxic to humans. Mildly toxic to pets if ingested — keep out of reach of animals.
