Hoya carnosa 'Albo' is a classic wax plant elevated by striking variegation — each waxy, oval leaf is edged or splashed with creamy white to ivory margins against a deep green center. A cultivar of the beloved H. carnosa, this variety retains all the charm of the species: vigorous trailing or climbing growth, long-lived foliage, and clusters of porcelain-pink, star-shaped flowers with a sweet, honey-like fragrance. A collector staple and a standout in any curated plant display.

Care Guide

Light

Bright, indirect light is essential — especially for maintaining crisp variegation. An east- or west-facing window is ideal. More light encourages flowering; insufficient light causes variegation to fade and reduces blooms. Avoid harsh direct midday sun, which can bleach or scorch the white portions of the leaf.

Water

Water thoroughly, then allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry before watering again. Hoyas store water in their semi-succulent leaves and are highly prone to root rot if kept consistently moist. Reduce watering frequency in fall and winter.

Humidity

Prefers moderate to high humidity (50–70%). Thrives in kitchens, bathrooms, or near a humidifier. Avoid cold drafts and heating vents, which dry out the air and stress the foliage.

Temperature

Ideal range is 60–85°F (15–29°C). Not frost-tolerant; protect from temperatures below 50°F (10°C). Consistent warmth encourages steady growth and flowering.

Soil & Potting

Use a fast-draining, chunky mix — a blend of orchid bark, perlite, and quality potting mix works well. Always use a pot with drainage holes. Like most Hoyas, 'Albo' prefers to be slightly root-bound; repot only when roots are visibly escaping the pot.

Fertilizing

Feed monthly during the growing season (spring–summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. A bloom-boosting formula (higher phosphorus) can encourage flowering. Reduce or stop feeding in fall and winter.

Flowering

Blooms appear on peduncles (flower spurs) that emerge from the same nodes repeatedly — never remove them. Slightly root-bound conditions and consistent bright light are the most reliable triggers for blooming. Flowers are long-lasting and intensely fragrant, especially in the evening.

Variegation Note

The white portions of variegated leaves contain less chlorophyll and are more sensitive to overwatering and sunburn. Handle with care and avoid wetting foliage directly. Highly variegated leaves are slower-growing but among the most sought-after in the collector community.

Toxicity

Generally considered non-toxic to humans and pets, though ingestion may cause mild stomach upset. Keep out of reach of curious pets and children as a precaution.
