Care Guide

• Light: Medium to bright indirect light is ideal. The crisp white striping is best maintained in a well-lit spot — too little light will cause the variegation to soften and the overall plant to weaken. Avoid direct sun, which will bleach the white lines and scorch the dark green base.
• Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Allow only the very top of the soil to dry before watering again. Use filtered, distilled, or rainwater where possible — Calatheas are sensitive to fluoride and chlorine in tap water, which causes brown leaf tips over time.
• Humidity: High humidity is essential — aim for 60–80%. Vittata is particularly sensitive to dry air, which will cause the leaf edges to brown and curl. A dedicated humidifier is strongly recommended; misting is less effective and can encourage fungal issues on the patterned leaf surface.
• Temperature: Prefers 65–85°F (18–29°C). Highly sensitive to cold — keep away from drafts, air conditioning vents, and temperatures below 60°F.
• Soil: A well-draining yet moisture-retentive mix works best — combine quality potting mix with perlite and a small amount of coco coir to balance drainage and water retention.
• Fertilizer: Feed monthly during the growing season (spring–summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer at quarter to half strength. Calatheas are light feeders — over-fertilizing leads to salt buildup and brown tips.
• Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years in spring, moving up one pot size at a time. Handle roots with care — Calatheas are sensitive to root disturbance.
• Leaf care: Gently wipe leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and preserve the sharp contrast of the white striping. Avoid leaf shine products, which can block the leaf pores and dull the natural finish.
