Calathea Peacock 6”
$15.00
The original showpiece of the prayer plant family. Calathea 'Peacock' (Calathea makoyana) is one of the most iconic Calatheas in cultivation, celebrated for its intricate, feather-like patterning — pale green ovals outlined in dark green, arranged symmetrically along a central midrib in a pattern that mirrors the eye of a peacock feather with remarkable precision. The underside of each leaf is a deep burgundy-purple, revealed nightly as the leaves fold upward in their characteristic prayer plant movement.
A classic for a reason. Architectural, precise, and endlessly captivating — a plant that rewards close attention and careful care in equal measure.
Care Guide
- Light: Medium to bright indirect light is ideal. The Peacock Calathea is more tolerant of lower light than many houseplants, but its intricate patterning is best maintained in a well-lit spot away from direct sun. Harsh light will fade the markings and cause leaf scorch.
- Water: Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Allow only the very top of the soil to dry before watering again. Use filtered, distilled, or rainwater where possible — Calatheas are sensitive to fluoride and chlorine in tap water, which causes brown leaf tips over time.
- Humidity: High humidity is essential — aim for 60–80%. This is non-negotiable for Calathea makoyana; dry indoor air will cause the leaf edges to crisp and curl. A dedicated humidifier placed nearby is the most effective solution.
- Temperature: Prefers 65–85°F (18–29°C). Highly sensitive to cold — keep away from drafts, air conditioning vents, and temperatures below 60°F. Even brief cold exposure can cause lasting leaf damage.
- Soil: A well-draining yet moisture-retentive mix works best — combine quality potting mix with perlite and a small amount of coco coir to balance drainage and water retention.
- Fertilizer: Feed monthly during the growing season (spring–summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer at quarter to half strength. Calatheas are light feeders — over-fertilizing leads to salt buildup and brown tips.
- Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years in spring, moving up one pot size at a time. Calatheas prefer to be slightly snug in their pots and do not like root disturbance — handle with care when repotting.
- Leaf care: Gently wipe leaves with a damp cloth to remove dust and preserve their natural sheen. Avoid leaf shine products, which can block the leaf pores and damage the delicate surface.
Non-toxic to humans and pets — a safe choice for households with children and animals.
