Alocasia Loco 3”
Wild by name and wilder by nature, the Alocasia Loco is a striking hybrid that lives up to its moniker with foliage of untamed, theatrical energy. Deeply lobed, arrowhead-shaped leaves with dramatically ruffled, undulating margins create a silhouette unlike any other alocasia in cultivation — simultaneously architectural and organic, structured and exuberant. The dark, glossy green surface is offset by pale, prominent venation that traces the leaf’s elaborate contours with precision.
A compact to mid-sized grower, the Loco is well-suited to statement shelving, pedestals, and interior vignettes where its distinctive form can be appreciated at close range. Like all alocasias, it is a plant of strong seasonal personality — vigorous and expressive in the warmer months, contemplative and restful in winter. A bold choice for the collector who values the unconventional.
Care Guide
- Light: Bright indirect light produces the most vigorous growth and deepest leaf color. Tolerates medium indirect light, though growth will slow and new leaves may emerge smaller. Avoid direct sun, which will scorch and bleach the glossy leaf surface.
- Water: Water thoroughly when the top 1–2 inches of substrate are dry. Alocasias prefer consistent moisture but are highly susceptible to root rot — excellent drainage is essential. Never allow roots to sit in standing water. Reduce watering significantly in winter when the plant enters dormancy.
- Humidity: Prefers 60–80% relative humidity. A dedicated humidifier is strongly recommended — low humidity is one of the most common causes of browning leaf margins and tips in alocasias. Avoid misting directly on the leaves, which can encourage fungal issues.
- Temperature: 65–85°F (18–29°C). Alocasias are sensitive to cold — protect from temperatures below 60°F, cold drafts, and air conditioning vents, which can trigger premature dormancy or leaf drop.
- Soil: A chunky, well-draining aroid mix is essential — combine orchid bark, coarse perlite, and a quality potting mix for optimal aeration and moisture balance. Avoid dense soils that stay wet for extended periods.
- Fertilizer: Feed every 3–4 weeks during the active growing season (spring through summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. Do not fertilize during winter dormancy.
- Dormancy: Alocasias may drop leaves and enter a rest period in winter, particularly in lower light or cooler conditions. This is normal — reduce watering, stop fertilizing, and allow the plant to rest. New growth will resume in spring.
- Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years in spring when roots begin to circle the pot. Choose a container only slightly larger than the root ball — alocasias are prone to root rot in oversized pots.
- Toxicity: Toxic to pets and humans if ingested due to calcium oxalate crystals. Keep out of reach of children and animals.
