The Variegated String of Hearts (Ceropegia woodii 'Variegata') is a collector-favorite trailing succulent vine prized for its delicate, heart-shaped leaves marbled in silver, green, and creamy white — with blush-pink undersides that deepen in bright light. Cascading elegantly from hanging baskets or high shelves, this South African native is as low-maintenance as it is breathtaking.

Care Guide

Light

Bright indirect to direct light is ideal. A few hours of gentle morning sun will intensify the pink and cream variegation. Avoid harsh midday sun, which can scorch the delicate leaves. Insufficient light causes the variegation to fade and vines to etiolate.

Water

Water thoroughly, then allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. As a semi-succulent, it is highly drought-tolerant and far more forgiving of underwatering than overwatering. Reduce watering significantly in winter.

Humidity

Adaptable to average household humidity (30–50%). No supplemental humidity required, making it an excellent choice for drier indoor environments.

Temperature

Prefers temperatures between 60–80°F (15–27°C). Protect from frost and temperatures below 50°F (10°C). Can tolerate brief temperature fluctuations but dislikes cold drafts.

Soil & Potting

Use a fast-draining mix — a cactus/succulent blend amended with extra perlite is ideal. Ensure the pot has drainage holes. Shallow, wide pots are preferred over deep ones, as the root system is relatively compact.

Fertilizer

Feed with a diluted balanced liquid fertilizer (half strength) once a month during spring and summer. Do not fertilize in fall or winter.

Propagation

Exceptionally easy to propagate via stem cuttings or tuber division. Lay cuttings on moist soil or place in water — roots develop quickly. The small tubers (corms) that form along the vines can also be pressed into soil to produce new plants.

Toxicity

Non-toxic to humans and pets.
