Senecio radicans, commonly known as String of Hooks or String of Bananas, is a fast-growing succulent trailer prized for its distinctive crescent-shaped leaves that cascade in long, flowing tendrils. Native to South Africa, this low-maintenance charmer is equally stunning in a hanging basket, trailing from a shelf, or spilling over the edge of a planter — its banana-like foliage adding a playful, sculptural quality to any space.

Care Guide

• Light: Bright indirect to direct light. String of Hooks thrives in a sunny south- or east-facing window. Insufficient light causes leggy, sparse growth and loss of the characteristic leaf shape.
• Water: Water deeply, then allow the soil to dry out completely before watering again. As a succulent, it is highly susceptible to root rot from overwatering — when in doubt, wait.
• Humidity: Tolerates average household humidity (30–50%). No supplemental humidity required — excess moisture in the air can encourage rot.
• Temperature: 60–80°F (15–27°C). Tolerates brief cooler periods but should be protected from frost and temperatures below 40°F.
• Soil: Well-draining cactus or succulent mix. Adding extra perlite (up to 50%) improves drainage and reduces rot risk significantly.
• Fertilizer: Light feeding with a balanced, diluted fertilizer (e.g., 20-20-20 at quarter strength) once a month during spring and summer. Do not fertilize in fall or winter.
