Philodendron Micans (Philodendron hederaceum var. hederaceum) is one of the most coveted velvety-leaved houseplants available, prized for its heart-shaped leaves that shimmer with an iridescent, velvet-like texture in rich shades of deep green, bronze, and burgundy. New growth emerges in warm copper and rust tones before maturing to a deeper, jewel-toned green — with a soft, light-catching surface that sets it apart from any other trailing Philodendron. Native to Mexico and the Caribbean, it is as vigorous and easy to grow as it is beautiful, making it an ideal choice for collectors and beginners alike.

Care Guide

Light

Bright to medium indirect light is ideal. Higher light levels intensify the bronze and iridescent qualities of the foliage and encourage faster, more compact growth. Avoid harsh direct sun, which will bleach and scorch the velvety leaves. Tolerates lower light better than many Philodendrons, though growth will slow and new leaves may emerge smaller and less vibrant.

Water

Allow the top inch to two inches of soil to dry out between waterings. Philodendron Micans prefers consistent moisture during the growing season but should never sit in waterlogged soil. Water thoroughly, then allow to partially dry before watering again. Reduce watering in fall and winter when growth slows.

Humidity

Prefers moderate to high humidity (50–70%). Higher humidity enhances the velvety sheen of the foliage and supports faster growth. Adapts well to average household conditions but benefits from a pebble tray or nearby humidifier, particularly in drier climates or during winter months.

Temperature

Thrives between 65–85°F (18–29°C). Protect from temperatures below 55°F (13°C) and cold drafts. Not frost-hardy.

Soil & Potting

Use a well-draining, moisture-retentive potting mix — a blend of standard potting soil, perlite, and a small amount of orchid bark works well. Always use a pot with drainage holes. Repot every 1–2 years in spring when roots begin to circle the bottom of the pot or emerge from drainage holes.

Fertilizer

Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer (half strength) every 2–4 weeks during the growing season (spring–summer). Do not fertilize in fall or winter. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can cause salt buildup and tip burn on the delicate velvety leaves.

Support

Naturally a vining, climbing epiphyte. Provide a moss pole, trellis, or coir pole to encourage larger leaf development as the plant climbs. Alternatively, allow it to trail from a hanging basket or high shelf for a cascading effect.

Propagation

One of the easiest houseplants to propagate. Take stem cuttings with at least one node and root in water or moist potting mix under warm, bright conditions. Roots develop quickly, and new growth appears within weeks.

Toxicity

Toxic to cats, dogs, and humans if ingested. Contains calcium oxalate crystals which cause oral irritation, drooling, and gastrointestinal discomfort. Keep out of reach of pets and children.
