The Hoya Parasitica 'Black Margin' is a vigorous, vining epiphyte native to Southeast Asia, distinguished by its thick, succulent-like leaves edged in a deep, near-black border that intensifies with bright light exposure. The contrast between the silvery-green leaf center and its dark margin gives this variety an almost graphic, sculptural quality — as much art object as houseplant.

Care Guide

• Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light. More light deepens the dark margin coloration — a well-lit spot near an east- or west-facing window is ideal. Avoid harsh midday sun, which can scorch the leaves.
• Water: Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry between waterings. Like all Hoyas, it is susceptible to root rot — err on the side of underwatering, especially in cooler months. The thick leaves store moisture well.
• Humidity: Adaptable to average household humidity (40–60%), though it appreciates higher levels. A pebble tray or humidifier will support faster, lusher growth.
• Temperature: Prefers 60–85°F (15–29°C). Protect from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and temperatures below 50°F.
• Soil: Use a fast-draining mix — a blend of quality potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark works well. Excellent drainage is non-negotiable.
• Fertilizer: Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Withhold feeding in fall and winter.
• Repotting: Hoyas prefer snug roots and bloom more reliably when slightly pot-bound. Repot only when roots are escaping the drainage holes, moving up just one pot size at a time.
• Blooming: Produces clusters of small, star-shaped flowers on peduncles (spurs) — never remove these, as new blooms emerge from the same spur each season.
• Support: Provide a trellis, moss pole, or allow it to trail from a hanging planter. Vines can reach several feet with maturity.
