Hoya 'Krinkle 8 Albo' is a rare and highly coveted variegated cultivar of Hoya carnosa, distinguished by its deeply puckered, crinkled leaves splashed with irregular patches of creamy white-to-silver variegation against a rich, waxy green. The distinctive texture — caused by eight indentations pressed into each leaf surface — combined with striking albo variegation makes this one of the most visually dramatic Hoyas available. A prized specimen for serious collectors.

Care Guide

Light

Bright indirect light is essential. The variegated sections of each leaf contain less chlorophyll, making this cultivar slightly more light-hungry than its all-green counterparts. A few hours of gentle morning sun will enhance variegation contrast and encourage blooming. Avoid harsh direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the white leaf margins. Insufficient light causes slow growth and may cause variegation to revert toward green.

Water

Allow the top half to two-thirds of the soil to dry out between waterings. As a semi-succulent, it stores water in its thick, waxy leaves and is tolerant of drought. Overwatering — especially in combination with poor drainage — is the most common cause of root rot and decline. Reduce watering significantly in fall and winter.

Humidity

Prefers moderate to high humidity (50–70%). Adapts to average household conditions but benefits from supplemental humidity in drier climates. A pebble tray or nearby humidifier is recommended, particularly in winter when indoor air tends to be drier.

Temperature

Thrives between 60–85°F (15–29°C). Protect from temperatures below 50°F (10°C) and cold drafts. Not frost-hardy.

Soil & Potting

Use a chunky, fast-draining epiphyte mix — a blend of orchid bark, perlite, and a small amount of potting mix is ideal. Always use a pot with drainage holes. Hoyas bloom more reliably when slightly root-bound; avoid overpotting. Terracotta pots are recommended to help prevent overwatering.

Fertilizer

Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer (quarter to half strength) every 2–4 weeks during the growing season (spring–summer). A phosphorus-rich formula can encourage blooming. Do not fertilize in fall or winter. Avoid over-fertilizing variegated cultivars, as excess nitrogen can push all-green growth.

Blooming

Produces clusters of waxy, star-shaped flowers in pale pink with a deep pink corona — sweetly fragrant, especially in the evening. Do not remove spent peduncles (flower spurs); new blooms emerge from the same spurs each season. Allowing the plant to become slightly root-bound and mildly drought-stressed between waterings can trigger blooming.

Propagation

Propagate via stem cuttings with at least one node. Root in water, moist sphagnum moss, or a well-draining mix under warm, bright conditions. Variegation is a cultivar trait maintained through vegetative propagation — seed propagation will not reliably reproduce the albo pattern.

Toxicity

Non-toxic to humans and pets.
