Charming, distinctive, and instantly recognizable, the Hoya Heart Silver — a variegated form of Hoya kerrii — elevates a beloved classic with a luminous silver-splashed variegation across its signature heart-shaped leaves. Each thick, succulent leaf is a natural valentine: perfectly symmetrical, deeply saturated in green, and generously marked with silver-white patterning that catches the light with a soft, living shimmer.

Most often grown as a single-leaf cutting for its iconic silhouette, the Hoya Heart Silver is equally rewarding as a multi-node vine, where it develops into a trailing or climbing specimen of considerable charm. Slow-growing and long-lived, it is a plant that rewards patience — a perennial favorite as a gift, a shelf accent, or a compact statement piece in any curated interior.

Care Guide

  • Light: Bright indirect light is ideal and will maintain the most vibrant silver variegation. Tolerates medium light, though variegation may become less pronounced and growth will slow. Avoid prolonged direct sun, which can scorch the thick, succulent leaves.
  • Water: Allow the substrate to dry out almost completely between waterings. The Hoya Heart is highly succulent and stores water in its thick leaves — overwatering is the most common cause of decline. Water thoroughly, then allow the mix to dry fully before the next watering. Reduce frequency significantly in winter.
  • Humidity: Adaptable to average household humidity (40–60%). Higher humidity (60–70%) is appreciated but not required — one of the more forgiving hoyas in this regard.
  • Temperature: 60–85°F (15–29°C). Protect from temperatures below 50°F and avoid cold drafts or air conditioning vents.
  • Soil: A fast-draining, gritty mix is essential — combine a quality potting mix with generous perlite and a small amount of orchid bark or coarse sand. Avoid any mix that retains moisture for extended periods.
  • Fertilizer: Feed monthly during the growing season (spring through summer) with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength. This is a slow grower — avoid over-fertilizing, which can cause salt buildup and leaf tip burn.
  • Single-leaf note: Single-leaf cuttings without a node will not develop into a full vining plant — they will remain as a single leaf indefinitely, which many collectors find charming in its own right. For a growing, vining specimen, ensure your cutting includes at least one node.
  • Blooming: Multi-node vines can produce clusters of tiny, star-shaped flowers with a sweet fragrance. Do not remove spent flower spurs — hoyas rebloom from the same peduncles season after season.
  • Repotting: Repot infrequently — hoyas bloom best when slightly root-bound. Repot only when roots are visibly escaping drainage holes.
  • Toxicity: Generally considered non-toxic to pets and humans — a pet-friendly choice for plant-filled interiors.
