The Bromeliad Guzmania is a stunning tropical epiphyte prized for its bold, architectural rosette of glossy, strap-like leaves and its spectacular long-lasting inflorescence — a vibrant central bract that blazes in shades of red, orange, yellow, or pink for months at a time. Native to the rainforests of Central and South America, Guzmania brings an unmistakable editorial presence to any interior.

Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which scorches the foliage. A north- or east-facing window is ideal; filtered light near a south or west window also works well.

Watering

Water into the central cup (tank) formed by the rosette, keeping it filled with fresh water at all times. Flush and refill the cup every 1–2 weeks to prevent stagnation. Keep the potting medium lightly moist but never waterlogged — Guzmania is susceptible to root rot.

Humidity

Prefers humidity of 50–70%. Mist the foliage regularly or place on a pebble tray with water. Thrives in bathrooms and kitchens with ambient moisture.

Temperature

Best kept between 60–80°F (15–27°C). Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F (13°C).

Potting & Medium

Use a well-draining, bark-based bromeliad or orchid mix. Guzmania is naturally epiphytic and does not require a deep pot — a shallow container with excellent drainage is preferred.

Fertilizing

Feed lightly with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer (quarter strength) applied to the central cup or foliage monthly during the growing season. Avoid fertilizing the roots directly.

Blooming & Lifecycle

Each rosette blooms once, with the colorful bract lasting 2–6 months. After flowering, the mother plant gradually declines and produces offsets (pups) at its base. These pups can be separated and potted once they reach one-third the size of the mother plant.

Toxicity

Non-toxic to humans, cats, and dogs — a rare and welcome trait for a showpiece tropical plant.
