Begonia 'Withlacoochie' is a rare cane-type begonia prized for its dramatic, asymmetrical foliage — deep olive-green leaves adorned with silver spotting and rich burgundy undersides. Named after the Withlacoochee River in Florida, this collector's specimen brings a lush, botanical elegance to any interior. Each leaf is a study in contrast: bold yet refined, wild yet architectural.

Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the foliage. An east- or north-facing window is ideal. Tolerates lower light better than most cane begonias, but growth will slow.

Water

Water thoroughly when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry. Begonias are susceptible to root rot — never allow the pot to sit in standing water. Reduce watering frequency in winter when growth slows.

Humidity

Prefers moderate to high humidity (50–70%). Avoid misting directly on the leaves, which can encourage powdery mildew. A pebble tray or room humidifier is recommended.

Temperature

Best kept between 65–80°F (18–27°C). Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 55°F (13°C).

Soil & Potting

Use a well-draining, airy mix — a blend of peat or coco coir, perlite, and a small amount of bark works well. Repot every 1–2 years or when roots begin to circle the base of the pot.

Fertilizer

Feed monthly during the growing season (spring through early fall) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Avoid fertilizing in winter.

Toxicity

Toxic to cats, dogs, and humans if ingested. Keep out of reach of pets and children.
