Begonia Brevirimosa
Begonia brevirimosa is one of the most visually arresting species in the genus — a collector’s plant that earns its place on any shelf. Native to Papua New Guinea, its large, asymmetrical leaves are a deep, iridescent green overlaid with vivid pink or magenta streaking that appears almost painted on. No two leaves are identical. Under the right light, the foliage shimmers with a metallic quality that photographs cannot fully capture.
A statement plant for the serious collector. Best suited to a humid, stable environment where its foliage can develop to its full potential.
Care Guide
- Light: Bright indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which bleaches the foliage and diminishes the iridescence. An east-facing window or a few feet back from a south/west exposure is ideal.
- Water: Keep the soil evenly moist but never waterlogged. Allow the top inch to dry slightly before watering. Reduce frequency in winter. Avoid wetting the leaves — water at the base.
- Soil: A well-aerated, moisture-retentive mix: peat or coco coir base with perlite and orchid bark for structure and drainage.
- Humidity: High humidity is essential — 60–80% is ideal. A pebble tray, humidifier, or enclosed cabinet (terrarium/Wardian case) will produce the best results. Avoid misting directly on leaves, which can cause spotting.
- Temperature: 65–80°F (18–27°C). Avoid cold drafts and temperatures below 60°F (15°C). Not frost-tolerant.
- Fertilizer: Balanced liquid fertilizer at quarter strength every two weeks during the growing season. Flush the soil periodically to prevent salt buildup.
- Repotting: Prefers to be slightly root-bound. Repot only when roots are visibly escaping the drainage holes, moving up just one pot size.
- Toxicity: Toxic to cats, dogs, and humans if ingested. The underground parts (rhizomes/tubers) are the most toxic. Keep out of reach of pets and children.
