Begonia Black Magic 4”
$18.00
Begonia Black Magic
Begonia 'Black Magic' is grown for its dramatic, near-black foliage with a velvety texture, a dark statement piece for collectors who love moody foliage. Like other ornamental rex-type begonias, it grows from a rhizome and is prized more for its leaf color and texture than for its flowers, though it may produce modest blooms under the right conditions.
- Pot size: 4" nursery pot
- Toxicity: begonias are considered toxic to pets if ingested, with the highest concentration of oxalates in the rhizome/roots — keep away from curious pets
Care Guide
- Light: Bright, indirect light. Too little light dulls the dark leaf color; direct sun can scorch the velvety foliage.
- Water: Keep soil lightly moist but never waterlogged. Let the top inch dry out between waterings, and water at the soil line to keep foliage dry and avoid fungal spotting.
- Humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity (50%+); pair humidity with some airflow to reduce the risk of powdery mildew.
- Temperature: 65–80°F (18–27°C); avoid cold drafts.
- Soil: Light, well-draining mix with good aeration — a peat-based or aroid-style mix with perlite works well.
- Fertilizer: Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength; skip in fall/winter.
- Common issues: Powdery mildew (poor airflow/overhead watering), leaf drop (sudden environment changes), faded leaf color (too little light).
