Anthurium clavigerum is a dramatic, large-growing species native to the rainforests of Central and South America, celebrated for its deeply divided, bird's-nest style foliage that can span several feet at maturity. Unlike the velvet anthuriums, clavigerum offers a bold, architectural silhouette — its deeply lobed, paddle-shaped leaves creating a lush, tropical canopy effect that few houseplants can rival.

Care Guide

• Light: Bright indirect light is ideal. Tolerates moderate indirect light but growth will slow. Avoid direct sun, which can bleach and damage the large leaf surface.
• Water: Water thoroughly when the top 1–2 inches of substrate are dry. Clavigerum appreciates consistent moisture but demands excellent drainage — never allow roots to sit in water.
• Humidity: Prefers 60–80% humidity. While more tolerant than velvet species, higher humidity encourages faster growth and larger leaf development.
• Temperature: 65–85°F (18–29°C). Protect from temperatures below 60°F and cold drafts, which can stunt growth and cause leaf damage.
• Soil: Chunky, well-aerated aroid mix — orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir. Given its large root system, good aeration is essential to prevent rot.
• Fertilizer: Balanced fertilizer (e.g., 20-20-20) at half strength every 2–4 weeks during the growing season. A nitrogen-forward formula encourages the large, lush foliage this species is known for.
• Repotting: Every 1–2 years or when roots become crowded. This species benefits from a wider, shallower pot to accommodate its spreading root structure.
