Alocasia Regal Shield Albo Purple Mother
A collector's crown jewel — where sculptural scale meets breathtaking variegation.
The Alocasia Regal Shield Albo Purple Mother is an extraordinarily rare form of the already-coveted Regal Shield, distinguished by sweeping silver-white variegation splashed across deep, shield-shaped leaves with rich purple-bronze undersides. This is a mother plant — a mature, established specimen with a proven track record of producing variegated offshoots, making it as much an investment as it is a centerpiece.
With leaves that can exceed two feet in length, dramatic upright architecture, and variegation patterns as unique as a fingerprint, the Albo Regal Shield commands attention in any space. Its rarity in cultivation is matched only by its presence.
Care Guide
- Light: Bright, indirect light is essential to sustain and develop variegation. Avoid direct sun, which will scorch the delicate white tissue. An east- or north-facing window with supplemental grow lighting is ideal.
- Water: Water thoroughly when the top 1–2 inches of soil dry out. Alocasias prefer consistent moisture without sitting in water — ensure excellent drainage at all times. Reduce frequency in winter when growth slows.
- Humidity: Thrives at 60–80% relative humidity. A humidifier, pebble tray, or greenhouse cabinet is strongly recommended, especially in dry climates or heated interiors.
- Temperature: Keep between 65–85°F (18–29°C). Protect from cold drafts and temperatures below 60°F, which can trigger dormancy or leaf drop.
- Soil: Use a chunky, well-aerated aroid mix — a blend of coco coir, perlite, orchid bark, and a small amount of worm castings provides excellent structure and nutrition.
- Fertilizer: Feed with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half-strength every 2–3 weeks during the active growing season (spring through summer). Avoid over-fertilizing variegated tissue, which is more sensitive than green growth.
- Repotting: Repot every 1–2 years or when rootbound, stepping up pot size by 2 inches. Spring is the ideal time to repot.
- Toxicity: Toxic to pets and humans if ingested. Keep out of reach of animals and children.
