Alocasia pseudosanderiana 'Bull Aurea' is among the most coveted jewel alocasias in cultivation — a rare, variegated form of the already-scarce Kris Plant. Native to the rainforest understories of the Philippines, this collector's specimen commands attention with its deeply lobed, arrowhead leaves edged in wavy, undulating margins. The 'Aurea' designation marks its most prized trait: a vivid golden-yellow variegation that splashes across dark, metallic-green foliage with almost painted intensity. Prominent silvery-white veining creates a stark, graphic contrast that elevates it beyond ornamental — this is living sculpture.

Each leaf is a one-of-a-kind expression. Due to the nature of variegation, no two plants are identical, making every specimen a genuine collectible. Grown in small quantities and rarely available, the Bull Aurea is an exceptional addition to any serious tropical or rare plant collection.

Care Guide

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light. The aurea variegation needs sufficient light to maintain its golden coloration — too little light and leaves revert toward green. Avoid direct midday sun, which will scorch the delicate foliage. East- or north-facing windows with filtered light are ideal.

Water

Water thoroughly when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry. Alocasias are sensitive to both overwatering and drought — soggy roots invite rot, while prolonged dryness causes crispy leaf edges. Use filtered, room-temperature water when possible to avoid tip burn from chlorine or fluoride.

Humidity

Requires high humidity — ideally 65–80%. A dedicated humidifier, humidity tray, or enclosed plant cabinet will help it thrive. Low humidity causes leaf curling and browning margins, which are especially visible on the ornamental foliage.

Temperature

Prefers temperatures between 65–85°F (18–29°C). Protect from cold drafts, air conditioning vents, and temperatures below 60°F. Not frost-tolerant.

Soil & Potting

A well-draining, chunky aroid mix is essential. Combine high-quality potting soil with perlite, orchid bark, and a small amount of horticultural charcoal to ensure aeration and drainage. Repot every 1–2 years or when rootbound, sizing up only 1–2 inches at a time.

Fertilizer

Feed monthly during the active growing season (spring through early fall) with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Avoid fertilizing in winter when growth naturally slows.

Common Notes

Like all alocasias, the Bull Aurea enters a natural dormancy period under stress or in lower light conditions — this is normal. Reduce watering during this phase and do not repot. New growth will emerge when conditions improve.

Toxicity: All parts are toxic if ingested. Keep away from pets and children.
