Alocasia Pink Black Velvet 4”

Alocasia 'Pink Black Velvet' is a rare and highly sought-after cultivar of Alocasia reginula, distinguished by its deep, near-black velvety leaves accented with blush-pink to rose variegation. The contrast between the dark, matte surface and the soft pink patterning makes this one of the most visually dramatic aroids available to collectors.

Care Guide

Light

Prefers bright, indirect light. The dark foliage can tolerate slightly lower light than many aroids, but growth will slow considerably. Avoid direct sun, which will bleach and scorch the leaves. An east-facing window or a well-lit interior spot is ideal.

Water

Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry between waterings. This cultivar is particularly susceptible to root rot — always use a pot with drainage and empty saucers promptly. Reduce watering frequency in autumn and winter.

Humidity

High humidity (60–80%) is essential to maintain the velvet texture and prevent leaf edge browning. A dedicated humidifier is strongly recommended. Avoid misting directly onto the foliage, which can encourage fungal issues.

Temperature

Maintain temperatures between 65–85°F (18–29°C). Keep away from cold drafts, air-conditioning vents, and any exposure below 55°F (13°C), which can cause rapid decline.

Soil & Potting

Use a fast-draining aroid mix: coco coir, coarse perlite, and orchid bark in roughly equal parts. Avoid dense, moisture-retentive potting soils. Repot only when root-bound, sizing up by no more than 2 inches to reduce overwatering risk.

Fertiliser

Feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring through summer) with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength. Withhold fertiliser entirely in winter. Over-fertilising can cause tip burn and salt build-up.

Dormancy

Like all Alocasia, 'Pink Black Velvet' may enter a rest period in lower light or cooler months, dropping leaves temporarily. This is normal — maintain warmth and humidity and new growth will resume in spring.

Toxic to pets and humans if ingested. Keep out of reach of children and animals.
