Alocasia Lauterbachiana

Alocasia lauterbachiana is a striking aroid prized for its narrow, arrow-shaped leaves, glossy dark green on top with a deep burgundy underside, and a texture closer to leather than typical houseplant foliage. It's an upright grower, more architectural and sculptural than bushy, making it a standout accent piece rather than a filler plant.

  • Pot size: 4" nursery pot
  • Toxicity: like most Alocasia, this plant is toxic if ingested by pets or people — keep away from curious cats, dogs, and children

Care Guide

  • Light: Bright, indirect light. Some gentle morning sun is fine, but avoid harsh afternoon rays.
  • Water: Let the top inch or two of soil dry out between waterings. Alocasias dislike sitting in soggy soil but also sulk if they dry out completely, so aim for consistency.
  • Humidity: Prefers high humidity (60%+). Dry air leads to crispy leaf margins and slowed growth.
  • Temperature: 65–85°F (18–29°C); keep away from cold drafts and AC vents.
  • Soil: Chunky, fast-draining aroid mix with good aeration — bark, perlite, and coco coir work well.
  • Fertilizer: Feed monthly in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer at half strength; stop in fall/winter.
  • Dormancy: May die back or slow down in low light/winter months — this is normal and growth usually resumes with warmth and light.
  • Common issues: Yellowing lower leaves (overwatering), crispy edges (low humidity), stunted growth (insufficient light).
