Alocasia Azlanii 4”
If there is one Alocasia that stops every collector in their tracks, it is the Alocasia Azlanii. Native to the rainforests of Borneo, this exceptionally rare species produces deep, jewel-toned leaves that shift between near-black and dark green depending on the light — overlaid with vivid, iridescent purple-pink veining that appears to glow from within. The leaf surface carries a subtle sheen that amplifies the color play, making every leaf look hand-painted. Compact, slow-growing, and endlessly fascinating — this is a crown jewel of any serious plant collection.

Care Guide
Light: Alocasia Azlanii thrives in bright, indirect light — this is what brings out the full intensity of its iridescent veining. The closer to a bright (but filtered) light source, the more vivid the purple-pink tones appear. Avoid direct sun, which will bleach the foliage and destroy the signature color. An east-facing window or a few feet back from a south- or west-facing window is ideal.
Water: Allow the top 1–2 inches of soil to dry between waterings. Azlanii is sensitive to both overwatering and underwatering — consistency is key. Water with filtered or rainwater when possible, as this species is particularly sensitive to chlorine and fluoride. Always ensure full drainage after watering.
Humidity: As a Bornean rainforest native, Azlanii demands very high humidity — ideally 65% or above. A dedicated humidifier is strongly recommended. Low humidity will cause leaf edges to brown rapidly and may inhibit new growth entirely. Do not rely on misting; it is insufficient and can promote fungal issues.
Soil & Potting: Use a premium, fast-draining aroid mix: orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir. Azlanii's roots need excellent airflow and should never sit in compacted or moisture-retaining soil. A terracotta pot can help regulate moisture. Repot carefully every 1–2 years, as the roots are delicate.
Fertilizing: Feed every 2–4 weeks in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertilizer diluted to half strength. Avoid over-fertilizing, which can cause tip burn. Do not feed in fall or winter.
Dormancy: Azlanii may slow or enter a rest period in cooler, lower-light months. Reduce watering and maintain warmth and humidity to keep the rhizome healthy. Resume regular care in spring when new growth appears.
Troubleshooting:
- Fading vein color: Insufficient light — move to a brighter location
- Brown leaf edges: Low humidity or mineral-rich tap water — switch to filtered water and increase humidity
- Yellowing leaves: Overwatering or poor drainage
- No new growth: Dormancy, low light, or root-bound — assess conditions and consider repotting
